I want to insert a steel 1/4-20 nut for a camera tripod mount. Is there some easy way to stop the print and push in my nut at just the right moment?

You should see pause print in the menu. you can try pressing that. Bit I heard it times out, so try it on a test print to see how it works first. The G code is M25 if you wanted to pause through pronterface. If you were really good at reading g code, you could insert a pause in the code. That would be an M226 command. Here's a list of supported g code commands, but make sure they apply to marlin, it'll say so in a chart by the command. I'll add this page to the resources section. reprap.org/wiki/G-code

I already tried the pause button but I had to raise the Z to make room and when I lowered the Z (by the same amount, I wrote it down) it went all crazy and jumped about 1/4" ahead in the program.
I'm going to try to put some plastic in mid air at the point where I can install the nut and just sit here and wait for it to get to it and manually hit pause.

Is there a better design you can use? check thingiverse maybe? they have models for everything there. Or just yse the plastic as a nut. it threads nicely if you size it right.

To insert Nuts into a print i'm doing it in while printing, just place two or more parts far away from another, and watch the Z height, insert the nut at the last layer before the closing layer, while the extruder is on the other part(s) I know, might sound stupid...but it works for me. It's always quite thrilling...😬😊

I experimented with failed piece I made, using a heat gun I heated the nut I wanted to enclose on a long bolt and pushed the nut into the plastic. The amount of force needed to dislodge the nut is amazing, it's totally glued in there. I'm going to take your tip Ralf but I'm going to use the pause and keep using heat before I place the nut. Thanks, I'll get back to you!

Yes, two or more. If you just print one part you can put a small second "fake/usless" part with the Same height as far as you need away from the main part.
